What Everyone Should Know About Money Before They Enter the Real World

This article is part a book review of The Real World by Joseph Sangl and part one woman's journey into the real world and how money really works and how to make it and save it. Enjoy this great article.

This review was written by CPF reader Christine Veloria.

I read What Everyone Should Know About Money Before They Enter THE REAL WORLD by Joseph Sangl. I wanted to read this book to see what types of information would be shared with someone that is not familiar with money before becoming independent. In my life I know some of the mistakes I have made regarding money and I realize if I had been taught about money and debt early on then maybe I would not have made some of the choices I have made. Now as a parent, I would like my children to learn about money before they enter the real world so hopefully they will avoid some of the mistakes I have made.
A great book for young adults!

I think this book is perfect for a young adult going out on their own or a high school student maybe in their junior year before deciding what to do about college. Mr. Sangl covers a wide variety of subjects that could help a young adult with the decisions they are going to have to make. He talks about how it is important to write down your goals and dreams because then they are more likely to happen. To plan where your money should go, a budget is a good tool so you can see where your money is going.

When you plan where you money is going it is easier to save and to give to charities that you want to support. There is a section on debt and how debt might be necessary for some purchases like a home but taking out too much can leave you stressed and feeling trapped. Maybe student loans are seen by some as necessary too but he suggests if it is possible to avoid student loans it is best to avoid them. He talks about credit scores and how to build a good score. To me one of the most important topics a young person can learn is how compound interest works, that is also in the book. There are also sections about buying a home and how discipline is important.

What Everyone Should Know About Money is only about eighty pages long and could easily be read in one sitting. I think it is a book that talks about the subject of money in an easy straight forward manner, which is not intimating. That is one of the things that I like about the book because it is more likely to appeal to someone who might not be too interested in learning about this subject but they know it is important information that they should know. It covers the basics in a short condensed book. I was thinking sometimes young adults might not what to hear some of this information from their parents and it might be better for them to read it from someone else.
Who the book is good for

I recommend this book to anyone that needs or wants to know about the basics of money. There are some good sections in the book for someone just starting out with money. I also strongly recommend the debt, college and compound interest sections for the high school student looking into going to college; this could help influence their decisions about college. Overall, I think it is a good book for someone who wants to start learning about money.

How to Save Money on Valentine's Day: Make A Plan

Got big plans for this Valentine's day? Is there a beautiful somebody you are planning on wowing with an expensive dinner, date, and gift?

If you are, this is a good article for you to read that will help you cut costs on Valentine's day.

This guest post was written by Ramsay who writes for needmoneytips.com, a blog about personal finance & supplemental income.

It’s an unspoken rule that the guy is responsible for Valentines Day. Most girls have expectations, and they will not tell you what they are. They hope for flowers, dinner and hopefully a romantic evening. While meeting your girls expectations can be tough, there is good news. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to sweep her off her feet. (For some ideas check out these 20 cheap & fun date ideas)

In my experience of listening to my wife and hearing her friends horror stories of dates gone bad, girls just want you to have a plan. Granted the better the plan the better the date. What she really wants is to know that you have put thought into the evening and you have a plan. It shows her that you care about her.

Valentine’s Day is less than 3 weeks away but there is still time. The best restaurants fill up fast. If you try getting a reservation the same week of the big day you will find yourself at Wendy’s with your girl asking you “Why didn’t you plan this better?” Or even worse, you might find yourself at a more expensive restaurant with a big bill and you’ll be asking yourself “Why didn’t I plan this better?”

Doing nothing because you are on a budget is a big mistake. No matter how frugal or wonderful your woman is, she still wants you to put some effort into Valentines Day.
Flowers

Flowers are a must. If your wife or girlfriend works she probably hopes that you will send her flowers at work. The sooner you buy them the cheaper they will be. Try Proflowers or 1800flowers.

This year might be a little different though because Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday. Most grocery stores have high quality flowers for low prices which means there is NO reason to pay top dollar at the florist. Buy the flowers the day before and store them in your fridge if you have to. If your budget is tight buy a single rose instead of a dozen. There is something special about getting a single flower and remember, it’s the thought you put into it that counts.
Dinner

Every Valentine’s date has to include dinner. You get to pick from the two obvious choices of going out or cooking dinner at home.

If your plan is to go out you have to make your reservation early. It may already be too late at some restaurants. When you call about reservations be sure to ask about the menu for Valentine’s Day. Most of the nicer restaurants will put out a special menu with fixed courses and high prices. Make sure you know what you are getting into before you go.

If you are doing dinner at home you are going to save a ton of cash. You can try to impress her with your cooking skills, or you can avoid that disaster and pick up pre-made dishes at a specialty grocery store like Wegmans or Whole Foods, Dean & Deluca.
Dessert

You can make dessert into a second event for the evening. It falls after dinner so it’s easy to use it to transition to another venue. You can move on to your dessert spot or you can save money by doing desert at home. Simple surprises go a long way.
Fun Things To Do

There aren’t always a lot of fun things to do on Valentine’s Day. For whatever reason there just seems to be fewer shows, plays, and events happening that night. Home can be a fun place too, if you put a little effort into it. It’s amazing what $15 worth of romantic music from iTunes and $5 worth of candles at Target can do to a house. This is where your creativity saves you money and earns you points with your wife or girlfriend.
Have Fun

Saving money is important, but it’s not the most important thing this Valentine’s Day. Once you have your plan set go have fun and forget about saving money and being frugal. Spend your time enjoying the one you are with.

Do-It-Yourself Jobs Save You Money

This article will go into detail on a few ways to get started saving money in your daily life by tackling Do-IT-Yourself Jobs instead of paying someone else to do them.

This article may inspire you or give you ideas on how to save money instead of spending it.

Most people are looking for ways to save money this year to make forward progress on important financial goals such as paying off debt or saving for emergencies. If you’re like a lot of people, you’ve already cut back in spending areas, such as entertainment, that tend to push you over your monthly spending goals.

As a spending oriented society we’ve grown quite used to having things done for us (myself included). There are many things your mom, dad, grandma or grandpa used to do themselves (do it yourself jobs) which didn’t cost them anything more than a little extra time. But companies today have learned to capitalize on the quick pace of life many of us tend to lead.

So, here’s my shot at some do it yourself jobs that can quite commonly be performed without requiring advanced training or unique skills. I think you’ll find you can save a little more money. If you have been paying them you may question why you ever paid to get these things done to begin with!

* Mowing your yard: There are a tremendous amount of yard maintenance companies raking in the cash as soon as the weather starts warming. From fertilizing, trimming the hedges to mowing, these are tasks that most folks can do themselves. Use it as an opportunity to get some fresh air! Monthly Savings: $$-$$$

* Creating your own landscaping design: I’ve always done our own landscaping around the house when we’ve decided to upgrade with more trees or shrubs. Landscaping can be quite costly. But just about anyone can quickly learn to plant a tree or shrubs and certainly flowers. Job Savings: $$$-$$$$

* Washing and ironing your clothes: There is a dry cleaning service on every busy street corner it seems these days. While some clothing requires professional cleaning the majority can be machine washed and ironed. Just read the tag carefully and plan an extra load of laundry per week. Monthly Savings: $$

* Changing the oil in your car: For most automobiles, there really is no secret or special skill required in changing the oil. Yet, there are quick car care companies across the nation with cars lined up outside on Saturday morning. I think it might just be faster to do this at home too! Yearly Savings: $$$

* Washing your car: I will admit having your car washed can be a convenient service, but there is something about being outside in the spring or summertime on a Saturday afternoon washing the car that can be fun. This particular job can be quite costly, especially if you’re getting all the bells and whistles wash. Monthly Savings: $$

* Cleaning your house: Years ago a house cleaner was only seen in the wealthiest of neighborhoods. But nowadays, you can find companies serviceing house cleaning needs everywhere. Make it a family event. Schedule one day a week in which the family pitches in and works together to get the house sparkling clean! Monthly Savings: $$$

* Painting rooms in your house: If you haven’t asked for an estimate, painting a room in your house can be quite expensive. Doing it yourself can save you hundreds of dollars (maybe more). Painting can be done by almost anyone and can actually be a good way to relax on a weekend afternoon. Just turn on some tunes and get to work! Job Savings: $$$-$$$$

* Performing your own home maintenance and repairs: I think I could write an entire post on this one area. There are plenty of jobs around the house that require little learning to perform them. As a homeowner, I’ve shored this gap up with my Home Depot 1-2-3 book that tells me everything I need to know about doing basic maintenance jobs around the house. I never knew I could repair toilets! Job Savings: $$$-$$$$

* Doing your own taxes: Here we are in tax season. How complicated is your situation? Should you do your own taxes? I’ve found performing your own taxes with software such as Turbo Tax is easy. I don’t have to schedule an appointment with a tax professional and the software guides me through the process. Savings: $$$
* Performing your own pet grooming: Many families have their favorite pet and take it be groomed by their vet, or other service. While a trip to the spa might be nice for your furry friend, pet grooming can be quite expensive. Monthly Savings: $$-$$$

Legitimate Work From Home Jobs - Five of Them

We live in tough times. Those who are not unemployed are under-employed. Many people agonize between taking a second job and family time. My goal is to share with you some resources that allow you to earn extra income for your family from the comfort of your own home on your schedule.

Many of these examples I have personally used to add extra income to my household when needed. I am not going to focus on starting an online business in this post (although, for the diligent there is money to be made in blogging, Adsense, creating your own products, selling on Ebay, and affiliate sales.) Instead, I want to introduce to you a few reputable work-from-home companies that will pay you for your work. All of these will send 1099’s for tax purposes.
5 legit opportunities to work from home
1. Demand Studios

They have many different employment opportunities that range from Writers, Editors, Title Editors, Filmmakers, and more. They are usually hiring for certain positions at certain times so you have to keep your eyes peeled. I have made several thousand dollars in article writing and title editing. I even got my wife into doing title editing and earning extra spending money. As a writer you can make between $7.50-$20.00 per 150-500 word article. I usually write about two articles an hour (that’s $30.00 an hour at $15.00 an article). You do not have to be a prolific writer or have a background in writing to get accepted. Most articles are in a “How to” format. So, if you are the type that enjoys learning something new and then explaining it to someone else then this could be a fun work for you. Most of their content goes on eHow.com or LiveStrong.com.

Let’s say you have a trip you want to take in a month. Just decide how many articles you would have to write a day to reach your goal. They pay by Paypal every Wednesday and Friday. There is no payment threshold that you have to meet either. If you have money in your account, you will get paid. They currently have thousands of titles to choose from in the system and you can reserve up to ten at a time. if this interests you, feel free to contact me on some tips for the application process.
2. Live Work

This is mostly like a running projects board for a company called LiveOps (which I will discuss later on). Live Work has many different projects that you can bid on. Many are data entry and task-oriented. You work as much as you want. I once worked on a Dictonary.com project and was paid for every definition and source that I put in the system. There really is a wide-variety of work available there.
3. Leapforce

They are a vendor for Google. Once you are accepted in the program you log-in to the Google interface and rate websites. Google wants their searches to be relevant. They use human raters to rate whether the content is worthy or spam. At the time of this writing, they pay $11.50 an hour.
4. Textbroker

This is a great place to earn extra income if you want to write on simple projects. They pay is much less, but the projects are easy to write on. I once wrote several 150 word articles for someone that was creating an Extreme Sports website. The work was fun. I simply wrote a short bio about different professional athletes.
5. Liveops

If you want more human interaction, then you might want to consider LiveOps. LiveOps is an at home call service that you dial into while in the comfort of your own home. You will have to make a weekly schedule, but you will never have to commute anywhere. All calls are inbound from people responding to infomercials and you basically take their ordering information while being logged into the LiveOps system. They pay is around $9.50 but you do earn commission for different products sold.

Wrapping it up

Hopefully, this list will get you started thinking about ways to supplement your income. This resource is also good for Stay-at-home moms that are looking for ways to earn so money without being on a tight schedule. There are many more work-from-home companies out there, but these are all ones I have had personal interaction with and can recommend that they are legitimate. If you have additional questions, please feel free to ask in the comments and I would be happy to answer any questions.

Is Straight Talk's Samsung Finesse Prepaid Smartphone a Good Option?

Samsung Finesse is a little bit of an oddity in the prepaid phone world. It is a smartphone with a touchscreen and that makes it different than most of the phones being offered by prepaid wireless companies today.

Straight Talk Wireless, a company owned by value wireless provider TracFone, has two bargain-priced prepaid plans that have been selling quite well to customers looking for affordable prepaid plans with good service and ample talk time.

When the company released the Samsung Finesse R810C to its lineup, it was clear it was targeting a different kind of cell phone customer. High-tech feature phones are becoming the norm in the cell phone industry and as such, prepaid companies are going to be adding more to their lineups in order to entice the modern day customer. It just makes sense.

Prepaid plans are no longer only for the penny-pinching, extremely frugal person anymore. The market has changed and now everyone seems to want a great deal. It makes sense that Straight Talk Wireless would release the Samsung Finesse smartphone into its ranks of available phones because there are customers out there who are scared away from prepaid plans (that may save them money) because they don't want a low-end model phone.

The Finesse R810C is a high-end phone with a large touchscreen for messaging and web browsing. It's a smartphone so it has a high level of functionality. It has a nice big screen for web browsing, which might be the biggest upside of this phone. With the unlimited Straight Talk plan, customers receive unlimited web browsing, and it might be worthwhile to have a phone built with a touch screen that makes checking out websites easy and fun.

*Learn more about this phone, including pricing and availability at StraightTalk.com

The price of the Samsung Finesse may turn some people off from the phone, but then again, the type of person turned off by the price of a phone isn't the true "smartphone customer."

The real aim of adding this phone to the Straight Talk lineup is to encourage people from the postpaid ranks used to their high-end phones to jump ship and give cheaper prepaid phone plans a chance.

On the one hand, the $300 price of the Finesse seems a little expensive, but on the other hand, it's clear that customers will be able to recoup the price of the phone quite quickly. Straight Talk's plans cost $30 and $45, which adds up to considerable savings when compared to other providers.

The Unlimited plan, which is more expensive, allows customers to use all the talk time and text messages they can in a given month-all for the price of $45. As mentioned above, the plan also includes unlimited web browsing which is a key feature and one that anyone considering the Finesse might consider as well.

The $30 plan provides 1,000 minutes talk time and 1,000 text messages. This plan is a very good value. It also included 30 mb of data use for surfing the web.

Samsung Finesse is an interesting and fun phone that may find some passionate users in the prepaid world. If you are interested in the phone (or any smartphone for that matter) do as much research as possible before investing in it.
